The American intellectual has not yet been favored with tax loopholes, nor has he been supplied with his own official depreciation schedule; but in every other respect he is now clearly regarded as a valuable resource of American democracy.  Inevitably, however, there is considerable disagreement over the most rational political use to be made of this resource. As of this moment, three distinct schools of thought are visible, if sometimes dimly.
