The Times: An Exchange

"The Times: An Exchange" (a rejoinder to Clifton Daniel), The Public Interest, Spring 1967.

Excerpt:

Seriously, though, I am disappointed by Mr. Daniel’s reaction to my article. That article tried to make some general points about the fundamental intellectual weakness of American journalism today and, inevitably, I took the New York Times as my point of departure. Mr. Daniel does not so much as refer to these general points; the very word, “journalism,” does not appear in his letter, except when he quotes me; and I must take this bland refusal as being symptomatic of the weakness I was alluding to.
