Abstract:

Women do not fit well into the model of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism involves groups asking for recognition based on their cultural identity. However, women do not constitute a distinct cultural group defined on the basis of historical tradition, as is the case with ethnic groups. Moreover, the women’s movement has long protested the treatment of women according to gender-based criteria. The women’s movement is oriented toward defining women as individuals deserving equal treatment, rather than as a separate group warranting special treatment.
