Excerpt: Until four or five years ago, it could be argued—and I myself did so argue—that the concern of some Jewish community leaders for the position of Jews in the United States was exaggerated. Anti-Semitism had suffered an unexpected but almost total collapse after World War II, as had anti-Chinese and anti-Japanese sentiment, and as had—to a less marked degree but still one amazing in the light of three hundred years of American history—anti-black prejudice.
