In this paper prepared for the 275th Anniversary Colloquium at St. John’s College in Annapolis and published in College in 1971, Diamond maintains that the liberal study of politics must be grounded in a respectful treatment of the regime’s fundamental principles and opinions. Both the American regime and the enterprise of teaching politics would benefit from such an approach, he argues.
