The Last Lover

"The Last Lover." Review of Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov (New York: Putnam, 1955). Griffin 7 (August 1958): 4-21. Also published as "The Last Lover: Vladimir Nabokov's 'Lolita'" in Encounter, October 1958: 9-18.

Excerpt:

Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita was first published in Paris in 1955. Its reputation was not slow to reach the country in which it had been written and in which, presumably, it could not be published. Reviews of the book appeared in some of the more advanced literary journals, and in 1956 The Anchor Review published a sizable portion of the novel, together with a thoughtful comment on the whole work by F. W. Dupee. Copies of the book, in the pleasant substantial paper-bound format which the Olympia Press devised for it, were brought back to the United States by returning travellers and were passed from hand to hand in a manner somewhat reminiscent of the early circulation of Ulysses in the ’twenties and Lady Chatterley’s Lover in the ’thirties.
