I find it hard, and I think it would be false, to write of Sherwood Anderson without speaking of him personally and even emotionally. I did not know him; I was in his company only twice and neither time did I speak with him. The first time I saw him was when he was at the height of his fame; I had, I recall, just been reading A Story Teller’s Story and Tar and they had confirmed the feeling which had already been strong for a few years that what Anderson had to offer was insufficient.
