While I am defending Hook, I might take the occasion to defend others of Carlyle’s biographers and commentators from Rosenberg’s aspersions. He says, for example, that the “conservative” interpretation of Carlyle has so generally prevailed that no one has challenged the contention that Carlyle was an ideologue of fascism.
