Abstract:

There are not many historians who preface a collection of essays with the statement that three of them had been rejected by the leading professional journals in the field. One of these essays, the aptly titled “Storm Over the Gentry,” is especially noteworthy because its publication in 1958 in a non-academic journal, Encounter, provoked a historical controversy that led to a major reassessment of a crucial period of English history, and, by implication, of modern history in general.
